I must say that I was a little bit thrilled to see that Thurston Moore and Byron Coley reviewed my books in their BULL TONGUE column that is available in the always neat ARTHUR magazine/now website. Not the biggest deal but still, especially after the fact that I had sort of lampooned Sonic Youth a few times in my books..I have ran into Thurston Moore at least a half dozen times, from being asked by him if I ever wrote to him (nope) to being in the company of Buzz at Amoeba Records in a sort of awkward meeting between those two gents, and even when I was in Polvo and we played in L.A. and Thurston and his wife created a guestlist for themselves before the band ever showed up at the club that we were going to be playing at. But I have never actually formally met him or introduced myself to him, let alone Byron Coley. But I guess I will next time:
Just got a little package with three issues of Brian Walsby’s Manchild comics (Bifocal Media), the third and fourth issues of which come with CDs by the always exquisite Melvins. Walsby was extremely active in artifying the punk underground of the mid-‘80s onward, and his books are densely scripted and great reads. Some of the stories are about Brian’s early years, but most are detailed accounts of hardcore bands, what happened to them, interactions Brain had with them over the years, etc. Kinda inside baseball, but totally fantastic if yr into the noise at all. We don’t agree with all of Walsby’s assessments, but we defend to the death his right to say that the Descendents improved over time. Now that’s funny!
Actually, the first Descendents album with the original lineup is by far the best version. Everyone knows that. What my Descendents cartoon said was that after their middle period with the "Enjoy" album (their worst record hands down) they got those Utah fellows to join and became a much better live band, did the "All!"album and did some more successful experimental stuff, like "Uranus" and stuff like that.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.
